Australian Baroque Table
Australian Baroque Table opens the sumptuous world of Australian seafood, from local Blue Swimmer Crab to Sydney Rock Oysters, Balmain Bug, and King Prawns. Inspired by the Baroque still life paintings of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, this series embraces the transience of seafood and traces food rituals within an Australian context. It moves from the changing colour of Blue Swimmer Crab as it cooks, to dressing Oysters with Australian Native Finger Lime Caviar, cutting a Balmain Bug down the centre to free the meat, to the curiosity of my son’s black cat Co Co when I am preparing King Prawns by removing their shells for eating. Each frame looks at Australian seafood through a contemporary Australian Baroque lens, where intimate everyday moments of food preparation become food art that celebrates local foodways.
